The Competition
The basis for the design of the Final Scheme was the selection of one of the competition entries produced in an earlier studio project. This competition entry focussed on an overall gestural scheme or parti, some conceptual images and a general, functional plan.

Site Plan

The generating ideas behind the competition scheme were to provide a very functional building (number of gates, proper curbside, short curb-gate distance) that created an organic shape that possessed momentum, through its curved, sleek, ground-hugging shape.

The section of the original scheme was a simple, traditional scheme, with departures above arrivals. A new element, called the galleria, was introduced at the upper level, under the roof, and consisted of varied retail spaces, restaurants, office space and administration. The idea here was to create a "street-scape" inside the airport, with the goal of re-introducing the city to the airport. This galleria eventually evolved into the hotel space of the final design.
